money orders
Prepaid bank checks
A money order is a prepaid payment document, similar to a check but guaranteed by the issuing institution rather than the buyer's bank account.
Money orders are purchased for a specific amount plus a small fee from post offices, banks, or retailers.
They're often used by people without checking accounts or when a seller requires guaranteed funds: She paid her rent with a money order.
Unlike personal checks, they can't bounce.
