bad checks

Insufficient funds documents

Bad checks are checks written on accounts with insufficient funds to cover them, or on accounts that don't exist at all.

Writing a bad check—also called a bounced check or rubber check (because it "bounces" back)—can result in bank fees, merchant penalties, and in cases of deliberate fraud, criminal charges.

He got arrested for passing bad checks all over town.

The phrase sometimes extends metaphorically to broken promises or commitments that can't be honored.
