molecular formulas
Atom count notation
A molecular formula shows the number and type of atoms in a molecule, using element symbols and subscript numbers: H₂O for water, C₆H₁₂O₆ for glucose.
Unlike structural formulas, molecular formulas don't indicate how atoms are arranged or bonded—they simply tally what's present.
The molecular formula for ethanol is C₂H₅OH.
