chemical equations
Balanced molecular formulas
Chemical equations are symbolic representations of chemical reactions, showing the reactants (starting substances) on the left side and the products (resulting substances) on the right, connected by an arrow indicating the direction of the reaction.
The formulas use chemical symbols and subscript numbers to indicate elements and their proportions, while coefficients show the relative amounts needed to balance the equation.
A balanced equation has equal numbers of each type of atom on both sides, reflecting the conservation of mass: 2H₂ + O₂ → 2H₂O shows hydrogen and oxygen combining to form water.
