modern artists

Modern artists are creators working in or associated with modernism—the movement spanning roughly 1860–1970 that broke from traditional techniques and subjects.

The term encompasses painters, sculptors, and other visual artists who embraced abstraction, experimentation, and new materials: Picasso and Pollock are canonical modern artists.

In casual use, modern artists may simply mean contemporary or currently living artists, though art historians distinguish modern from contemporary (post-1970).
