model minorities

"Successful" immigrant stereotype

Model minorities are ethnic or racial groups stereotypically portrayed as achieving success through hard work, education, and cultural values—often held up as examples for other minority groups to emulate.

The term is most commonly applied to Asian Americans.

Critics argue the concept obscures diversity within groups, minimizes discrimination, and is used to dismiss systemic barriers facing other minorities: The model minority myth puts unfair pressure on Asian students.
