Milk crates are square plastic containers with latticed sides, originally designed for transporting milk bottles.
Their sturdy construction and convenient size have made them ubiquitous for improvised storage, moving belongings, and makeshift furniture—particularly among college students and urban dwellers: My first bookshelf was just milk crates stacked on their sides.
Stacked milk crates also serve as outdoor seating or makeshift DJ booths.
