military dictatorship

Army-controlled autocracy

A military dictatorship is a government in which armed forces hold political power, typically after seizing control through a coup.

The head of state is usually a general or military junta rather than a civilian.

Military dictatorships often suspend constitutional rights, impose martial law, and suppress opposition: Argentina was under military dictatorship from 1976 to 1983.
