mid-stream

Between the banks

Mid-stream means in the middle of a river or current, away from both banks.

More often it appears figuratively for the middle of an ongoing process or activity: She interrupted me mid-stream.

To change horses mid-stream is to switch methods or leaders during a critical phase—generally inadvisable.

Also spelled midstream.
