microgrooves

Minuscule etched lines

Microgrooves are the tiny spiral grooves on a vinyl record that encode audio information.

The stylus rides in these grooves, and their microscopic undulations translate into sound.

The term emerged in the late 1940s when long-playing records replaced the wider grooves of 78 rpm discs: The microgroove technology allowed more music per side.
