medieval aristocracy
Castle-dwelling ruling class
Medieval aristocracy was the hereditary ruling class of the Middle Ages in Europe—nobles, lords, and landed gentry who held power through birthright, land ownership, and military obligation to monarchs.
The system was hierarchical: kings granted lands to dukes and earls, who granted portions to lesser nobles, creating chains of loyalty and service.
The medieval aristocracy controlled virtually all wealth and political power.
