mechanist
Clockwork universe believer
A mechanist is someone who believes that natural phenomena, including life and consciousness, can be explained by mechanical or physical processes alone—without invoking vital forces or supernatural causes.
The term appears in philosophy and history of science, where mechanists like Descartes argued the universe operates like a machine.
In older usage, a mechanist was simply a machinist or someone skilled in mechanics.
