matryoshka dolls
Russian stacking toys
Matryoshka dolls are Russian nesting dolls—a set of wooden figures that fit inside one another, each slightly smaller than the last.
The outermost doll opens to reveal another inside, which opens to reveal another, and so on.
The word has become shorthand for anything with nested or layered structure: The conspiracy theories were matryoshka dolls, each one containing another.
