matn

Matn is the chain of text in an Islamic hadith—the actual words attributed to the Prophet Muhammad, as distinct from the isnad (the chain of narrators who transmitted it).

Hadith scholars evaluate both: the isnad for reliability of transmission, the matn for internal consistency and compatibility with established doctrine.

The matn of this hadith contradicts a stronger tradition.
