matchgirl
Pavement kindling vendor
A matchgirl is a girl or young woman who sells matches on the street, a figure associated with Victorian-era poverty and child labor.
The term is most familiar from Hans Christian Andersen's fairy tale "The Little Match Girl," in which a freezing child strikes her wares one by one to keep warm.
Matchgirl evokes pathos and vulnerability, conjuring images of ragged clothing and desperate circumstances.
