magnetic stripes

Swipeable data strips

Magnetic stripes are the dark bands on the back of credit cards, ID cards, and hotel key cards that store data readable by swiping machines.

The stripe contains encoded information—account numbers, access credentials—that a magnetic reader can retrieve.

Though increasingly replaced by chips and contactless technology, magnetic stripes remain common: The card reader couldn't read the worn magnetic stripe.
