machines
Gears and motors
Machines are devices that use mechanical power to perform tasks.
The word covers everything from simple levers and pulleys to complex engines and computers.
A machine can be any apparatus with moving parts: sewing machine, washing machine, slot machine.
Figuratively, machine describes anything that operates with mechanical efficiency: a well-oiled machine, the political machine.
To machine something is to shape it with power tools: machined aluminum parts.
