lunatic asylums

Victorian psychiatric institutions

Lunatic asylums were institutions for confining and treating the mentally ill, common from the 18th through mid-20th century.

The term reflects older views of madness as lunar-influenced and is now considered archaic and offensive.

Modern equivalents are psychiatric hospitals or mental health facilities.

The old lunatic asylum on the hill has been converted to condominiums.
