lunar tides

Ocean's monthly swells

Lunar tides are the rise and fall of ocean waters caused by the gravitational pull of the moon.

As the moon orbits Earth, its gravity draws water toward it, creating high tides on the side facing the moon and the opposite side.

The sun also contributes, but the moon's closer proximity makes it the dominant force: The lunar tides were especially dramatic during the full moon.
