lowball offer
Bargain basement bid
A lowball offer is a bid or proposal significantly below what's expected or reasonable, often an opening move in negotiation.
The term comes from poker, where lowball games reward the lowest hand.
In real estate, a lowball offer might be 20% under asking price: They came in with a lowball offer, hoping the seller was desperate.
The verb lowball means to make such an offer or to underestimate deliberately: Don't lowball me—I know what it's worth.
