lockups

Places of detention

Lockups are places of temporary confinement, typically holding cells at police stations where suspects are detained before arraignment or transfer.

The term extends to any period of mandatory retention: in finance, a lockup is a contractual period during which investors cannot sell their shares after an IPO.

The startup's executives faced a six-month lockup on their stock options.

In publishing and design, lockup refers to a fixed arrangement of elements—such as a logo with tagline—that must appear together unchanged.
