line-item veto

Partial bill rejection

A line-item veto is the power to reject specific provisions of a bill while approving the rest.

Most U.S. state governors have this authority over budget legislation, allowing them to strike individual spending items without vetoing an entire appropriations bill.

The U.S. president lacks this power—Congress briefly granted it in 1996, but the Supreme Court struck it down as unconstitutional.

The governor used her line-item veto to eliminate funding for the bridge project.
