lieutenant governors
Gubernatorial second-in-commands
Lieutenant governors are officials who serve as second-in-command to governors, assuming executive authority when the governor is absent, incapacitated, or leaves office.
In the United States, most states elect lieutenant governors separately or on a ticket with the governor.
In Canada, lieutenant governors are appointed federal representatives who serve as the Crown's representative in each province.
The role varies widely—some lieutenant governors have substantial duties, others are largely ceremonial: The lieutenant governor presides over the state senate.
