executive branches

Governments' enforcement arms

Executive branches are the parts of governments responsible for implementing and enforcing laws.

In systems with separation of powers, the executive branch is distinct from the legislative branch (which makes laws) and the judicial branch (which interprets them).

The term typically refers to a president or prime minister and the agencies under their authority: The executive branches of state governments vary in structure.
