letter-box

Door mail slot

A letter-box is a slot or container for receiving mail—either in a door, on a post, or mounted on a wall.

In British usage, letter-box also means a public mailbox for sending letters.

As a verb, to letter-box is to deliver promotional material directly through residential mail slots.

In film and video, letterboxing displays widescreen content with black bars above and below to preserve the original aspect ratio: The DVD is letterboxed, not cropped.
