mail chute
Building's letter shaft
A mail chute is a vertical shaft in a tall building through which letters and small packages drop to a collection box in the lobby.
Common in early-to-mid 20th century office buildings, mail chutes allowed people on upper floors to post letters without descending: She dropped the envelope into the mail chute on her way back from lunch.
