legal blindness

Statutory sight impairment

Legal blindness is a threshold of visual impairment recognized by law, typically defined as corrected visual acuity of 20/200 or worse in the better eye, or a visual field of 20 degrees or less.

The designation qualifies individuals for disability benefits, tax deductions, and other accommodations.

Someone who is legally blind may retain partial sight—the term marks an administrative category, not total blindness.
