Louis Braille

Louis Braille (1809–1852) was the French educator who invented the Braille system of raised-dot reading and writing for the blind.

Blinded in childhood by an accident, he developed his tactile alphabet while a teenager at the Royal Institute for Blind Youth in Paris.

The system, adapted from a military night-writing code, uses patterns of one to six raised dots to represent letters, numbers, and punctuation. (Lowercase braille is the system itself.)
