lead and follow
Guide and respond
Lead and follow describes the two complementary roles in partner dancing.
The lead initiates movements and guides direction; the follow responds to those cues and executes them.
The division isn't about skill level—both roles require technique and sensitivity.
She prefers to lead, but she can follow too.
The phrase extends to any cooperative activity where one person directs and another responds.
