lava fountains
Spurting molten plumes
Lava fountains are jets of molten rock that shoot upward from volcanic vents, propelled by expanding gases.
They can reach heights from a few meters to several hundred meters, creating spectacular displays during eruptions.
The fountains feed lava flows and build spatter cones as ejected material falls back to earth.
The lava fountains at Kilauea lit up the night sky.
