latewood

Late-season tree growth

Latewood is the denser, darker portion of an annual growth ring in wood, formed during the latter part of the growing season when cell growth slows.

It contrasts with earlywood, the lighter, more porous wood produced in spring.

The alternation creates the visible grain pattern in lumber: The latewood bands were unusually thick that year.
