summerwood
Late-season tree growth
Summerwood is the denser, darker portion of an annual growth ring in trees, formed during the latter part of the growing season when cell growth slows.
It contrasts with the lighter springwood formed earlier in the year.
The alternation creates the visible rings used to determine a tree's age.
