earlywood
Spring tree layer
Earlywood is the portion of a tree's annual growth ring formed during spring and early summer, when conditions favor rapid growth.
It appears lighter and less dense than the latewood that forms later in the growing season.
The contrast between earlywood and latewood creates the visible ring pattern in cross-sections of wood: The earlywood was soft enough to dent with a fingernail.
