lanais

Tropical outdoor rooms

Lanais is the plural of lanai, a roofed porch or veranda, especially in Hawaiian architecture.

The term comes from Hawaiian and refers to an outdoor living space that's typically covered but open on one or more sides: The hotel rooms all had private lanais overlooking the ocean.

In mainland U.S. usage, lanai often describes any covered patio or sunroom.
