lake pigment
Insoluble color compound
A lake pigment is a colorant made by precipitating a dye onto an inert powder base, creating a pigment that can be mixed into paints or inks.
Unlike dyes, which dissolve, lake pigments remain suspended as particles.
The term comes from lac, a resinous substance once used to make red dye: carmine lake, madder lake.
