knuckling

Grinding with fists

Knuckling is walking or standing with the knuckles or top of the foot touching the ground rather than the sole—a gait abnormality in animals, especially horses and dogs, often indicating neurological problems or weakness.

In humans, knuckling refers to pressing or rubbing with the knuckles: She was knuckling her eyes.

To be knuckling down is to apply oneself seriously to a task; to be knuckling under is to submit or yield.
