knuckle bones
Ancient children's playthings
Knuckle bones are the small bones of the finger joints, or more specifically, the rounded ends of the metacarpals that form the knuckles.
The term also refers to an ancient game played with small bones—originally the ankle bones of sheep—tossed and caught like jacks: Children have played knuckle bones for thousands of years.
