knock-knock joke
"Who's there?" gag
A knock-knock joke is a formulaic children's joke built on a call-and-response pattern.
One person says "knock knock," the other asks "who's there?" The first gives a name or word, the second repeats it with "who?" and the punchline turns on a pun: Knock knock. Who's there? Boo. Boo who? Don't cry, it's just a joke.
The format is so rigid that subverting it has become its own comedic tradition.
