knight's fee
Military land tenure
A knight's fee was a unit of land in medieval England granted by a lord in exchange for military service—typically the obligation to provide one armed knight for a set period each year.
The size varied considerably, generally enough land to support a knight and his household.
The baron held twelve knights' fees from the crown.
The system formed the basis of feudal military obligation before cash payments replaced personal service.
