kilowatt hour

Electricity bill measure

A kilowatt hour is a unit of energy equal to one kilowatt of power sustained for one hour.

It is the standard measure for billing residential and commercial electricity consumption.

My electric bill showed I used 800 kilowatt hours last month.

Despite the name suggesting time, a kilowatt hour measures total energy consumed, not the rate of consumption—running a 100-watt bulb for ten hours uses one kilowatt hour.
