kibbutzes

Cooperative Israeli farms

Kibbutzes is the plural of kibbutz, a collective agricultural community in Israel where members share property and labor.

The kibbutz movement, rooted in socialist and Zionist ideals, established these settlements beginning in the early twentieth century.

Members traditionally pooled income and raised children communally, though many kibbutzes have since privatized: She spent a summer volunteering on one of the kibbutzes near the Sea of Galilee.
