joss-stick

Burning aromatic rod

A joss-stick is a slender stick of incense, burned especially in East Asian religious practices and ceremonies.

The joss comes from a Portuguese word for god, so joss-sticks are literally god-sticks—offerings whose fragrant smoke rises toward heaven.

The temple was hazy with smoke from joss-sticks.
