jiu jitsu
Ground fighting art
Jiu jitsu is a Japanese martial art focused on grappling, joint locks, and throws rather than strikes.
The art emphasizes using an opponent's force against them, allowing a smaller person to defeat a larger one.
Brazilian jiu jitsu, developed in the early 20th century, places greater emphasis on ground fighting and submission holds: She's been training jiu jitsu for three years.
Also spelled jujitsu or ju-jitsu.
