An invisible fence is a pet containment system that uses buried wires or wireless signals to create a boundary, paired with a collar that delivers a warning tone or mild shock when the animal approaches the perimeter.
The term sometimes extends to any boundary that's understood but not physically marked: There's an invisible fence between the two departments—nobody crosses it.
