sybaritism

Love of luxury

Sybaritism is devotion to luxury and sensual pleasure.

The word comes from Sybaris, an ancient Greek city whose inhabitants were legendary for their self-indulgence and soft living.

A sybarite pursues comfort and pleasure above all else: His sybaritism showed in the silk sheets, the private chef, the afternoon massages.

The term usually carries a note of disapproval or amused excess.
