ingrowth

Growth turning inward

Ingrowth is the process of growing inward or the result of such growth.

In medicine, it often describes tissue growing into a space where it doesn't belong—bone ingrowth into a joint replacement, or the familiar annoyance of an ingrown toenail.

The word also appears in biology and ecology for organisms colonizing an area from within: bacterial ingrowth in the sample.
