force play

Runner must advance

A force play in baseball occurs when a runner must advance to the next base because a batter has become a runner, allowing the defense to record an out simply by touching the base before the runner arrives.

The shortstop stepped on second for the force play, then threw to first for the double play.

The situation creates the force; when the force is removed, fielders must tag the runner instead.
