Fake grassroots artist
An industry plant is a musician or artist who appears to have risen organically through talent and grassroots support but actually had significant backing from record labels or industry connections from the start.
The term is usually derogatory, implying the artist's authentic indie image is manufactured: People called her an industry plant when they found out her dad was a music executive.
The accusation often surfaces when an unknown artist achieves suspiciously rapid success or lands major opportunities without apparent groundwork.
