icefalls

Glacial steep sections

Icefalls are sections of a glacier where the ice flows over a steep drop, breaking into a chaotic jumble of crevasses and towering blocks called seracs.

They're the frozen equivalent of waterfalls, though the "falling" happens over years rather than seconds.

Icefalls are among the most dangerous terrain for mountaineers: The Khumbu Icefall on Everest has claimed dozens of lives.
