hydrophobia

Dread of water

Hydrophobia is an extreme fear of water, most famously as a symptom of rabies—infected animals and humans develop painful throat spasms when trying to swallow, creating an aversion to drinking.

More loosely, hydrophobia describes any intense fear or avoidance of water: His hydrophobia kept him away from pools and beaches.
